HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University men's soccer team announced the addition of four more student-athletes for the upcoming 2008 season. The list consists of Marco Franca, Christiam Campero, Jorden Hilgefort and Daniel Withrow.
The four newcomers enhances the 2008 recruiting class, which includes three other signees for the upcoming season.
Campero played soccer at Fleix Varela Senior High School and was twice a first team member in the state of Florida. He also played on the back-to-back state championship teams in 2006-07 and 2007-08.
"He has a great poise on the ball and likes to play quickly," Marshall Men's Soccer Head Coach Bob Gray said. "A center midfielder by trade, we will look to use him at a variety of positions and excited to see him challenge for playing time in the fall."
Joining Campero, another Florida native, Franca comes to Marshall from Sunset Senior High School. He was named second team All-Dade in 2007-08.
"Marco will look to immediately help our flank play, either as an outside back or midfielder," Gray said. "He is a very patient player, consistently makes sound decisions, and distributes extremely well with his left foot. I like that he will run at people and take his chances one on one, and we will give him the green light to do the same thing in the fall."
A native of Hebron, Kentucky, Hilgefort comes with an extensive high school career that includes first team all-state as a senior and four plus years of club soccer experience.
"We think the combination of Jordan's drive, work ethic, and his knowledge of the game will lead him to be a top notch Division I player," Gray said.
To add depth at the goalkeeper position, the Herd adding Withrow.
During Withrow's high school career at Rochester Adams High School, he had 27 shutouts in three years and was named the team's 2007 captain and MVP.
"Daniel is a great find for us and I believe will surprise us in the fall," he said. "He has the attributes to make him a quality goalkeeper at this level - great size, build, athleticism, good hands and feet."
After wrapping up the recruiting class, the Marshall Thundering Herd soccer team will now prepare for its exhibition opener, Saturday, August 16, at 7 p.m. against Rio Grande.
