HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Green and White sides fought to a 2-2 (25-16, 24-26, 23-25, 25-17) tie in Friday afternoon's best-of-four sets Marshall University volleyball scrimmage at the Cam Henderson Center.
The Green, trailing 2-1 after three sets, posted a victory in the fourth and final set of the scrimmage to even the contest at two sets apiece.
Thundering Herd juniors Emily Sullivan and Kristin Marcum led the way for the Green team, picking up 11 kills each, while setter Elizabeth Fleming dished out 26 assists on the afternoon.
"I thought we did some good things today," head coach Mitch Jacobs said following the match. "I started to notice more improvements after sets one and two." Jacobs did most of the setting for the White squad and registered 27 assists to go along with eight kills.
Both sides displayed strong defensive efforts at the net as the Green accumulated 9 blocks (3 solo, 12 assisted) while the White finished with 7 blocks (1 solo, 12 assisted).
Senior Jalicia Ross smashed five assisted blocks and added a solo for the Green, while Fleming assisted on three blocks. Sophomore Kelley Bugler added a solo and an assisted block for the team.
Freshman Cameron Yoho, who split time between the squads, added four assisted blocks while on the White, and tallied a solo block for the Green. Sophomore Layne Kehl, freshmen Megan Carlson and Meredith O'Malley and Jacobs each assisted on two blocks.
Freshman libero Jessica Dhoore played on both sides of the net and picked up 10 digs while playing for the Green.
"I thought Dhoore improved as the match went along," Jacobs added. "But [assistant coach] Ellen Hayes was the player of the match. It's a good thing she's in charge of our liberos and defensive specialists because she certainly led by example today."
Hayes finished with a match-high 22 digs for the White squad, while assistant coach Patrick Nicholas totaled a match-high 15 kills and added a solo block.
Sophomore Elizabeth Herman, who also played on both teams, picked up six kills and nine digs while on the Green team.
"I saw some good things from our defense," added Jacobs. "Hopefully that continues into our Green-White match next week and as we get ready to go for our opening match next Wednesday."
The Herd will take to the court again for its annual Green/White game-scrimmage, Wednesday, Aug. 27. Match-time is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Henderson Center. Marshall will then open its 2008 regular season at the University of Cincinnati Tournament. The Herd will face Tennessee Tech, Friday, Aug. 29 at 4:00 p.m., Wright State, Saturday, Aug. 30 at 10:00 a.m., before concluding with host Cincinnati at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 31.
