Women's Soccer Continues with Two-Match Winning Streak

EMMITSBURG, Md. - Marshall University freshman Katie Ball (Louisville, Ky.) led the women's soccer team with two goals as the Thundering Herd shut out Mount St. Mary's University, 4-0, Saturday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium. Marshall improved to 2-0 while Mt. St. Mary's dropped to 0-2 for the season.

"Against a very well coached team, we were much more effective today than on our season opener," Marshall's interim head coach Kevin Long said. "I was pleased with our progress over the last week."

Junior Molly Snead (Cincinnati, Ohio) chipped it past Alicia Miller from six yards out to register her ninth career and first season goal in the 12th minute off a Ball pass. Snead finished with four shots, three being on goal.

In the 55th minute, Ball tallied her first career and season goal with a through ball past Miller from 12 yards out. Angela DeSumma (Doylestown, Pa.) added an assist in the Herd's second goal.

Only after 14 minutes, Ball tapped in her second career and season goal from 12 yards to put the Herd up 3-0 in the 69th minute. Sophomore Missy Gordon (Carmel, Ind.) added four shots and one assist.

Freshman Kaitlin Devine (Leonardtown, Md.) registered her first career and season goal in the 86th minute off an Erika Duncan (Easthaven, Scotland) rebound shot off the post.

Junior keeper Liz Orton (Fort Collins, Colo.) took the victory with one save while Mount St. Mary's Miller and Kitzmiller finished with nine saves.

The Herd dominated play with 22 shots with 13 being on goal. The Mount tallied three shots, one on goal.

"We played a better game from start to finish," coach Long added. "I am pleased with our defensive play which created our offensive opportunities."

The Saturday afternoon contest was the first meeting in school history.

Marshall will play host to The Citadel, Radford and Mount St. Mary's next weekend with the fourth annual Thundering Herd Nike Invitational at Sam Hood Field. The Herd will first face The Citadel in the first meeting between schools, Friday at 8 p.m. and close the invitational against Radford, Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. Radford and Mount St. Mary's will face off at 5:30 p.m., Friday evening and Sunday morning, the Mount challenges The Citadel at 11:30 a.m.
