Herd Men's Golf Concludes Play at Cardinal Intercollegiate

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Tournament-host Louisville set a 54-hole school record with a total of 834 to claim the Cardinal Intercollegiate on Tuesday, nine strokes ahead of second-place Eastern Kentucky and Kansas State (843). The Marshall University men's golf team placed 14th with a score of 903 as junior Christian Brand (Charleston, W.Va.) led the Thundering Herd contingent with a score of 221 (t-40th).
The Cardinals, who entered the day tied with Denver for tournament lead, fired 273 (second-lowest total in school history) to win the trophy for the second time in U of L annals. Denver finished in fourth-place at 846 and Indiana was fifth with 848.
Louisville had four of their five players shoot under 70 on Tuesday. The 15-team tournament was played at the par-72, 7,001-yard Cardinal Club.
Trey Bowling of Eastern Kentucky shot a tournament record 200 (65-70-65) to take home medalist honors, while Robert Streb of Kansas State was four shots back at 204 (69-69-66).
Marshall's score of 903 (304-296-303) was two strokes behind 13th-place George Mason (901). Herd senior Nathan Kinker (Barboursville, W.Va.) and junior Phil DiLorenzo (Wellsburg, W.Va.) carded identical scores of 224 to finish in a tie for 53rd place.
Brand was the lone MU golfer to post a round at par, doing so in Monday's second round. Brand carded a 1-over 73 in round one and closed the tournament with a 76.
The Herd will conclude its fall season on Oct. 13-14 when it participates in the Xavier Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio.
