AKRON, Ohio - The Marshall swimming and diving team lost 145-90 to a good University of Akron squad Saturday. It was the Thundering Herd's first meet of 2009 and the first since the squad's swimmers' training trip to Costa Rica and the divers' trip to Puerto Rico.
"We were a little flat today," said Marshall head coach Leonard Kraus. "I thought we were really tired but those are just excuses."
Facing her toughest competition of the year, senior Siobhan Schuurman failed to win either the one-meter or three-meter dives for the first time in a dual meet this season. Schuurman finished second in the one-meter with a 236.55 and third in the three-meter with a 246.38.
Haley Holmquist was fourth in the one-meter, scoring 225.90, and fifth in the three-meter with a 193.05. Rachel Hannum was sixth in both the one-meter and three-meter events.
"I thought that divers did really well," Kraus said. "Siobhan didn't win for the first time all season but Akron's divers are just fantastic.
"I thought we had about 10 good swims. I thought Megan Demeter had a good swim. Our backstrokers Kelsie Eberly and Erin Kennedy performed pretty well as did Ally Melinksy in 200 breaststroke."
Melinksy won the 200-yard breaststroke by nearly two full second, clocking in at 2:27.74.
Marshall's 200-yard medley relay team of Eberly, Briana Burns, Kayla Truswell and Kyla Jungclaus finished second with a time of 1:54.33.
Burns, Jenae Moreno, Eberly and Demeter also finished second with a 1:43.74 in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Jenny Johnsson came in second in the 1000 free with a time of 10:40.40. Lindsey Stock finished third in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:15.26.
Marshall's next swimming and diving meet will be at home against Ohio University on Jan. 20.
