IRVING, Texas - Junior Kendall Sutton of the Marshall University men's soccer team was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
Sutton anchored a stout Marshall defense to a 4-1 victory against the Southern Methodist Mustangs on Saturday night at Sam Hood Field. The Mustang goal came in the 81st minute when the match was far out of reach.
"This award is an accumulation of the whole year," head coach Bob Gray said. "Kendall has been rock solid for us from the beginning of the season, and Saturday was no exception."
The Wheaton, Maryland, native was all over the pitch against SMU, making big play after big play. He and the entire MU defense frustrated a potent Mustang attacking front for the entire match.
"Kendall is very good at breaking things up before they can get started," Gray said.
The Herd defense, along with freshman Daniel Withrow in net, has been a major reason why MU claims sole possession of first place in C-USA. The unit has allowed 11 goals through 11 games thus far, and has only surrendered one goal in three C-USA contests.
"We have won five out of six games, and Kendall is a major part of that accomplishment," said Gray.
This is Sutton's first career C-USA Player of the Week honor.
The Herd looks to make it four consecutive victories, and six out of seven, Wednesday night when it plays host to the University of Charleston. Kickoff at Sam Hood Field is set for 7 p.m.
