IRVING, Texas - Coming off a first place finish at the Furman Invitational, sophomore Matt Schiffbauer was named Conference USA Cross Country Male Athlete of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday.
For the Morgantown, W.Va., native, this is his second weekly honor this season. He has now received the award in back-to-back races.
"Matt is at the top of his game," head coach Jeff Small said. "He is running very motivated, and he is really excited about getting his first collegiate cross country win."
Schiffbauer led the men to a first place team finish at the Furman Invitational last Saturday in a field of 15 universities. Schiffbauer crossed the line ten seconds before the second-place finisher with an 8K time of 26:32.
It is becoming a year to remember for Schiffbauer. Along with registering the first win of his collegiate career, he has yet to finish outside of the top ten. He placed 2nd at the Greensboro Invitational, 6th at the Mel Brodt Invitational, and 7th at the EKU Invitational.
Kristina Olsen of UAB was the Female Athlete of the Week.
Schiffbauer leads the Herd to Evansville, Ind., this weekend to take part in the Evansville Invitational. This will be Marshall's last tune-up before the C-USA championships in Houston, Texas, on Oct. 31.
