Marshall University's men's golf team will open its spring season by facing Ohio Univeristy in a duel match at the Palmetto Dunes Resort in Hilton Head, S.C., Saturday. Both teams will then compete in the Wexford Intercollegiate Tournament scheduled for Monday and Tuesday at Hilton Head's Wexford Plantation.
This marks the first time in decades that Marshall will face a single opponent head-to-head.
"This will be the first time we have played a duel match in more than 20 years," Marshall coach Joe Feaganes said. "Traditionally, in the 1950's and 60's, Marshall and Ohio opened the golf season with a duel match. This is a unique opportunity for both of us to play competitively prior to the Wexford Intercollegiate."
The 18-hole match will be played on the par 72, 7,005-yard Jones Course at Palmetto Dunes.
The Thundering Herd's five-man travel squad includes junior Christian Brand from Charleston, junior Phil DiLorenzo from Weirton, freshman Bosten Miller from Charleston, freshman Carson Schambach from Glen Dale and freshman Ryan Brookshire from Grapevine, Texas.
Following the duel with Ohio, Marshall will compete as one of 16 teams in the Wexford Intercollegiate hosted by Francis Marion University at the par 72, 6,828-yard Wexford Plantation course.
Joining Marshall in the tournament are - Ohio, Rhode Island, USC-Aiken, Elon, Richmond, Wofford, Bowling Green, Davidson, Cleveland State, George Mason, Presbyterian, USC-Upstate, George Washington, St. Josephs and Francis Marion.
