LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Marshall softball was dealt a 8-0 loss against tournament host UNLV in the team's second game of 2009 Friday at the Sportco Kickoff Classic.
"We got out played today and I'm not disappointed in that," head coach Shonda Stanton said. "I'm very disappointed in our lack of aggressiveness and handling a challenging environment."
The Runnin' Rebels (1-0) put up their first run in the bottom of the first when Alyssia De La Torre singled to center field. De La Torre advanced two bases after two sac bunts and finally scored on a wildpitch from Katie Murphree (Tallahassee, Fla.).
UNLV's second run came in the next inning when Brittany Meade singled and was hit home by De La Torre.
The Thundering Herd (1-1) threatened in the third inning when senior Kelly Nielson (Tucson, Ariz.) reached base on an error and sophomore Jessica Hughes (Stillwater, Okla.) singled to shortstop will with one out.
Senior Rachael Sofie (Everett, Wash.) grounded out and advanced the runners but Marshall wouldn't be able to capitalize as senior Joscelyn Bitner (Virginia Beach, Va.) would strike out to end the Herd's threat.
The Rebels would continue with their offensive onslaught in the third scoring four runs including three home runs. UNLV would go on to add two more runs in the fourth to extend the lead to 8-0
Marshall couldn't get anything going offensively in the fourth and fifth with the game ending due to the eight run rule after five innings.
Murphree would take the loss for the Herd going two innings allowing five runs and six hits. In relief, Caitlyn Jackson (Ontario, Calif.) went three innings to finish the game.
For Marshall, only Jackson and Hughes finished with one hit apiece.
Marshall will be back in action Saturday morning against UIC before all four teams are seed for tournament play. The game is scheduled for a 1:15 p.m. EST start.
