TULSA, Okla. - With the completion of the 13-game home stand, the Marshall University Softball team gets back on the road this weekend with a conference match-up against league leading Tulsa starting Saturday March 28.
The Thundering Herd (16-10, 4-2) and Golden Hurricane (21-9, 6-2) are no strangers as they will meet for the 12th time since joining Conference USA as Tulsa leads 6-5 overall. In their first year together Marshall took two out of three games in Huntington before the two met in the tournament in Tulsa.
The Herd defeated the Golden Hurricane in the semifinals 1-0 but Tulsa came back through the loser's bracket and won the championship game, 3-0 on a walk-off home run.
When Marshall went into Tulsa the following year, the team lost the first two but followed up with a Sunday win. Last season at the new Dot Hicks Field, the Golden Hurricane fell in game one but rallied taking games two and three.
Over the weekend, Marshall lost its first C-USA series of the year against Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles took game one Saturday 7-2, but a determined Herd team swung its way to an 8-2 victory in game two.
In the rubber match Sunday, unfortunately for Marshall was decided with one at-bat when Southern Miss went yard in the third and going on to win 3-0. While Tulsa is coming off a three-game sweep over Memphis and a victory over Oklahoma State Wednesday 5-3.
The Golden Hurricane is lead by two preseason C-USA all-conference team members including outfielder Lauren Lindsay and pitcher Jordan Kinard. Lindsay leads the team in batting average at .394, RBIs with 22 and seven home runs.
Kinard leads a three person pitching staff that boasts a 3.37 ERA. Jackie Lawrence carries the best ERA on the team with a 1.68 in nearly 80 innings of work.
The two teams will play Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. EST. That will be followed up Sunday with a single game starting at 1 p.m. EST.
