BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Marshall University softball team will then be back on the road for its second Conference USA road trip in as many weeks as the team is set to take on the UAB in a three-game series starting Saturday.
The Thundering Herd (23-13, 8-4) will travel to Birmingham for the second time since joining Conference USA leading the series 7-4. Last season in Huntington, Marshall took two out of three from the Blazers (12-27, 4-14) including an 11-0 win in game three.
During the last series in Birmingham, UAB took that series two to one and in 2006 while in 2006 fell all three times to the Herd with two shutouts. The two teams met in 2001 at the Georgia Tournament in Atlanta. The two teams split as the Herd won the season opener 4-3 and fell later that weekend 2-4.
Both teams are coming off midweek nonconference splits as Marshall shared games with Miami (OH) Tuesday and UAB traded off with Chattanooga in Birmingham.
In the midweek contests against Miami (OH), the Herd fell behind early in game one 7-0 before coming back in the next two inning plating six runs cutting the lead to one. With addition of a solo shot in the sixth, the RedHawks held on to an 8-6 win.
Game two marked a different tone for the Herd as the team scored seven of their own runs in the bottom of the first in route to a 10-1 win in five innings. In the game, freshman Alianna Telles (Sylmar, Calif.), senior Rachael Sofie (Everett, Wash.) and sophomore Melanie Stoehr (Tacoma, Wash.) each homered.
Saturday's doubleheader is slated for a 2:00 p.m. EST and the same time for Sunday's single game. Gametracker will be available for all three games this weekend.
