HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University's head women's soccer coach Kevin Long announced the 2009 schedule for the upcoming fall season. The Thundering Herd will face 11 Conference USA foes and eight non-conference opponents.

"I am very pleased about the schedule for the 2009 season," Coach Long said. "It is extremely competitive and I think it has a great balance of home contests."

The Herd opens its regular season with a home contest against Cleveland State, August 23. Marshall now leads the all-time series after a 6-0 victory in 2004.

Marshall then travels to Pittsburgh, Pa. to play in Duquesne University's weekend tournament, Aug. 28-30. The Herd faces the hosts Friday evening and closes the tournament Sunday afternoon against Manhattan College. Duquesne leads the all-time series with Marshall, 1-0. Sunday's match with the Jaspers will be a first-time meeting between the two schools.

The Herd then plays host to first-time opponent, Winthrop, September 4 at Sam Hood Field. Marshall then travels to Radford, Va. Sunday, Sept. 6 for a Sunday afternoon match with the Highlanders. Radford leads the all-time series, 1-0-1, after a 2-2 tie last season.

Marshall has a week break before playing host to Mid-American Conference opponent, Ohio University, Sunday, Sept. 13. The Bobcats lead the all-time series, 7-0-1, after a 1-1 double overtime tie last season.

The Herd then travels to Lexington, Ky. to compete in the University of Kentucky's weekend tournament, Sept. 18-20. Marshall plays Liberty University, Friday evening, with the Herd leading the series 1-0 after a 1-0 win in 1999. The Herd closes the tournament against first-time opponent, Western Kentucky, Sunday afternoon.

Marshall will open its C-USA play with a four-match home stand beginning with the University of Houston, Friday, Sept. 25. Marshall leads the all-time series, 2-1, with Marshall wining last season 2-1. The Herd and the Owls meet Sunday, Sept. 27, with Rice leading the all-time series, 3-0, after a 3-1 victory last season.

The next weekend closes the home stand when UCF and Southern Miss travel to Huntington. UCF and Marshall meet Friday, October 2, with the Knights leading the all-time series, 3-0. The Herd fell 4-0 to the Knights last season. Marshall then faces Southern Miss Sunday afternoon, with the Herd leading the all-time series, 2-1. Marshall defeated the Golden Eagles 4-0 last season.

Marshall begins a four-match road trip Friday, Oct. 9 when the Herd travels to Dallas, Texas to face SMU. The Mustangs lead the all-time series, 2-0. SMU defeated Marshall 4-0 in 2006. Marshall then travels to Oklahoma to face Tulsa, Sunday, Oct. 11. The Hurricane leads the all-time series, 2-0, after a 2-1 victory in 2006.

Marshall concludes its final road trip weekend with UTEP and Colorado College. The Herd plays UTEP, Friday, Oct. 16. The Miners lead the all-time series, 3-0. Last season, the Herd fell 2-0. Marshall then travels to Colorado Springs, Colo. to face the Tigers, Sunday, Oct. 18. Colorado College leads the all-time series, 3-0, after a 3-1 victory last season.

To conclude the regular season, Marshall has a three-match home stand with two of those matches against the regular season co-champions and tournament champions. The Herd plays host to regular season co-champion and tournament champion, Memphis, Friday, Oct. 23. The Tigers leads the all-time series with the Herd, 4-0. Marshall fell 4-0 to the reigning champions last season. UAB travels to Huntington, Sunday, Oct. 25. The Blazers lead the all-time series, 4-0, and took a 2-1 victory last season.

Marshall's final regular season match will be against regular season co-champion, ECU, Friday, Oct. 30. The Pirates lead the all-time series over the Herd, 3-0-1, after a 3-2 double overtime victory last season.

"We are hoping that our strong showing this past spring will allow us to hit the fall season in stride, Coach Long added. " We have set high goals for us in the fall, and I am eager to get started!"

The C-USA women's soccer championship will be hosted by SMU at the Wescott Field and will run Nov. 4-8.
