Women's Soccer Defeats Cleveland State University, 2-0

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.-Marshall University's Erika Duncan (Easthaven, Scotland, UK) and Kristen Berquist (Highland Village, Texas) each tallied a goal in a 2-0 victory over Cleveland State University in Sunday afternoon's women's soccer match at Sam Hood Field.
Marshall improves to 1-0 on the season, while Cleveland State drops to 0-1. Senior goalkeeper Liz Orton (Ft. Collins, Colo.) earned the victory with her four saves for the Herd, while Kelly Zinkiewich (Oakville, Ontario) registered six saves and was charged with the loss.
A centering pass from midfielder Angela DeSumma (Doylestown, Pa.) found Molly Snead (Cincinnati, Ohio) in the box. Snead's shot was deflected off a Vikings defender, straight to Duncan, who was able to launch a shot past Zinkiewich for the Thundering Herd's first goal of the 2009 regular season.
Marshall was able to add to their lead in the second half with a goal from junior defender Berquist. DeSumma's corner kick made it to the far corner where Berquist was able to place a shot just inside the back post.
"This is a good result, they are a good team and will be a challenger in their conference," Head Coach Kevin Long said of Cleveland State. "I am very pleased we were able to rise to the challenge."
The Thundering Herd outshot the Vikings 15-6. Marshall also dominated Cleveland State in corner kicks, 9-1.
Marshall hits the road next weekend for the Duquesne University Tournament. The Herd will take on tournament host Duquesne on Friday Aug. 28. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Marshall will take on Manhattan two days later on Aug. 30. That game kicks off at noon.
