HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- The Marshall University's women's soccer team travels to the Duquesne University Tournament in Pittsburgh, Pa. for its first road trip of the 2009 season. The Herd (1-0) takes on tournament host Duquesne (0-1) on Friday, August 28. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. MU concludes the weekend with their first ever meeting with Manhattan College (0-0) on Sunday, August 30, with a noon start time.
Marshall began 2009 regular season play last Sunday at Sam Hood Field, with a 2-0 victory of Horizon League opponent, Cleveland State (0-1).
Co-captain Liz Orton (Ft. Collins, Colo.) earned her ninth career shutout, tying her with Kayla Johnson as the all-time career leader in shutouts. The Thundering Herd outshot the Vikings 15-6 and 8-4 in shots on goal. Erika Duncan (Easthaven, Scotland, UK) and Kristen Berquist (Highland Village, Texas) each tallied a goal in the victory.
"We still haven't played a lot, we found some answers after Cleveland State but we have two very challenging games in Pittsburgh," Marshall Head Coach Kevin Long said. "It will be a good test of our level of competitiveness."
Duquesne enters Friday night's contest with a 2-0 all-time lead over The Herd and are looking to bounce back after losing their season opener to Saint Francis (Pa.) 2-1.
Junior forward Samantha Kaiser (Erie, Pa.) headed the lone goal for the Dukes. Goalkeeper Gabby Morrin (Perrysburg, Ohio) registered four saves in the loss.
Manhattan begins their 2009 regular season this weekend at the tournament, taking on Robert Morris on Friday night. The Jaspers were picked to finish sixth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) preseason poll. Senior defender Jill Beauchamp (Westerly, R.I.) and senior midfielder Courtney McMahon (Bethel, Conn.) were both named to the 2009 preseason All-MAAC Team.
"Success at Pitt is part of what this young, eager team wants to accomplish this season," said Long. "They know that all these non-conference games prepare us for a tough conference schedule."
