HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall volleyball head coach Mitch Jacobs announced the hiring of the new assistant coach, Kariny Ritter, on Friday.

"I'm very excited to have a person with Kariny's volleyball experience join us as our Graduate Assistant," said head coach Mitch Jacobs.

"When Ellen (Hayes) left us for a full time coaching position I knew it would take a very special person to fill her shoes. In Kariny, Marshall has a person that has excelled at the highest level of Conference USA and understands what we need to do to get back to the top of this league. Being from Brazil, she brings a long line of experience and a little different view of the game to help add to our team's preparation."

Ritter joins the Marshall staff after an excellent collegiate career at University of Houston. The Brazilian native played two seasons for the Cougars and garnered numerous accolades as an outside hitter. As a senior, Ritter was named AVCA Honorable Mention All-America and first team All-Region. She was also named first team Conference USA, to the C-USA All-Tournament team, along with being named C-USA Player of the Week on three occasions. As a senior she recorded double-digit kills in 27 of 28 matches and her 4.70 kills-per-game ranked third in C-USA and was 24th in Division I.

Prior to Houston, Ritter played two seasons at Western Nebraska Community College, where she was named All-America Second Team as a sophomore and All-Region and All-Region Tournament team honors on two occasions.

The Marshall volleyball team starts its preseason practices on Aug. 10. The first match of the season is slated for Aug. 28 against Binghamton University at the Hofstra/Asics Invitational in Hempstead, N.Y., at 4:30 p.m.
