HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University women's soccer team looks to improve on its best start in school history, 5-0, when it hosts Ohio University (1-2) on Sunday afternoon at Sam Hood Field. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
MU is coming off a two win weekend, defeating Winthrop, 1-0 and Radford, 2-0. After allowing 38 goals last season, the Thundering Herd stands alone in Conference USA as the only team to not allow a goal this season.
For the second week in a row, a Marshall women's soccer player earned C-USA weekly honors. Senior Molly Snead (Cincinnati, Ohio) was awarded the C-USA Offensive Player of the Week after recording the game winning goal in both MU victories over the weekend. Snead is now second on Marshall's all-time list with five career game winning goals.
Goalkeeper Liz Orton (Ft. Collins, Colo.) registered two more shutouts on the weekend to bring her season total to five and her career total to 13.
Angela DeSumma (Doylestown, Pa.) tallied two assists in the victory over Radford. She enters the weekend as C-USA's leader in assists with four.
Ohio travels to Indiana State on Friday before coming to Huntington to take on the Herd. The Bobcats are coming off a 3-1 victory over Cleveland State, to earn its only win of the season.
Sara Seitz (Englewood, Ohio) led the Bobcats with five shots, one goal and one assist in the victory over Cleveland State. Coming into the weekend she leads the team with six shots on the season.
Ohio Head Coach Stacy Strauss enters the weekend just one win shy of her 80th career win.
"This is our biggest test before conference play and I'm glad it's coming now," Marshall Head Coach Kevin Long said. "Last year's match and the spring match were both competitive and I think that we've improved from last season just like everyone else has."
Last season's matchup between the Herd and the Bobcats ended in a 1-1 tie (2OT), however Ohio still remains unbeaten in the all-time series, 7-0-1. Ohio has outscored Marshall 25-5 in eight career matches.
"We've been giving up about three goals a game to them and I'd like to think that we've come a long way since then," Long said.
