The Marshall University men's golf team opens the Fall portion of the 2009-10 season this weekend in Ann Arbor, Mich. for The Wolverine at Radrick Farms. The 54-hole tournament begins with Saturday's shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Day one features 36 holes with the event scheduled to conclude on Sunday with 18 holes beginning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
In addition to MU, 13 teams are scheduled to compete highlighted by the tournament host, Michigan and Arkansas. The Wolverines finished sixth in stroke play at the NCAA Championships last Spring. The Razorbacks were second in match play and 10th in stroke play at the 2009 national tournament. Rounding out the field are Baylor, Eastern Michigan, Iowa State, Louisville, Miami (Ohio), Minnesota, St. John's, Toledo, Xavier and Wisconsin.
Marshall's line-up which was determined through six rounds of qualifying, will include freshman Nathan Kerns (Ironton, Ohio, Ironton H.S.) in the number one slot. Kerns won the 2009 Ohio Golf Association Junior Amateur Championship this past Summer.
A pair of juniors, Bennett Boyer (Millersburg, Pa., Millersburg Area H.S.) and Dustin Culip (Marlinton, W.Va., Pocahontas County H.S.) will be in the number two and three positions. Sophomores Bosten Miller (Charleston, W.Va., Capital H.S.) and Carson Schambach (Glen Dale, W.Va., John Marshall H.S.) will occupy the four and five spots respectively. Miller was the low amateur at the 2009 West Virginia Open, placing third overall.
Senior Christian Brand (Charleston, W.Va., Capital H.S.) who would have likely played in the No. 1 slot for the Herd, has elected to redshirt this year. Brand, the 2007 Conference USA Freshman of the Year, was the Marshall leader in scoring average (75.57) and rounds played (32) a year ago.
"Christian switched majors last year," said Marshall Head Coach Joe Feaganes. "He lost some hours and will need the entire fifth year to graduate, so we made the decision to redshirt him. You hate not having your best player in the lineup, but we will all be better in the long run."
