Men and Women Place Third at EKU Invitational

RICHMOND, Ky. - Both Marshall men's and women's cross country teams finished in third place behind the University of Kentucky and Eastern Kentucky in their first meet of the 2009 season at the EKU Invitational.
Sophomore Matt Schiffbauer (Morgantown, W.Va.) led the Thundering Herd on the men's side as he crossed the finish line in a time of 19:40 in the four-mile race. He was seventh overall.
Freshman David Caldwell (Dunbar, W.Va.) ran very well in his first collegiate race, placing second on the team and ninth overall. Caldwell was 15 seconds behind Schiffbauer with a time of 19:55.
Kathleen Clark (Twinsburg, Ohio) was the first female Herd runner to finish the race as she posted a 5K time of 17:34 and placed 15th overall.
Leslie Thomas (Montgomery, W.Va.) was Marshall's second finisher, completely the course in 18 minutes flat. Right behind her was MU's Allison Cox (Scott Depot, W.Va.) with a time of 18:07.
"I am happy with how we ran today," Coach Jeff Small said. "Everyone ran well."
The Thundering Herd is back on the trails next weekend as they travel to Bowling Green, Ohio, and compete in the Mel Brodt Invitational on Sept. 12.
