Huntington, W.Va. - The Marshall University women's tennis team cruised past the Morehead State Eagles in the Herds first match of 2010, winning 7-0 Saturday afternoon at the Huntington Tennis Club.
The afternoon started with all three Herd doubles pairings winning lopsided matches. Playing as No. 1, freshman Dominika Zaprazna and junior Catherine Kellner made quick work of the Eagle's Kayla Tuscany and Lauren Delaney, 8-2. The tandem of Deanna Bailey and Kara Kucin took an 8-5 victory as second doubles, while the team of Thaddea Lock and Kristina Koprcina won as No. 3 doubles, 8-3.
Zaprazna and Kellner continued their strong play as they both had easy wins in singles. Zaprazna, playing as the No. 1, defeated MSU's Alexandra Rydberg 6-1, 6-1. Kellner, playing in the second spot, defeated Madeleinne Antero by the same score.
Deanna Bailey took down Alix Young in the third position 6-0, 7-6 (3). Kristinia Koprcina won in the four spot 6-4, 6-3, and Thaddea Lock made quick work of Brooke Helms in the fifth position, 6-2, 6-1.
Kucin finished off the sweep in come-from-behind fashion as she defeated Lauren Delaney 4-6, 7-6 (2), 10-1.
"We had our ups-and-downs today," head coach John Mercer said. "I am happy to get that first one out of the way though. I am very proud of how Dominika and Catherine played in the one and two spot."
Marshall hits the road for its contest as the Herd travels to Eastern Kentucky on Jan. 29. The match is set to start at 10 a.m.
