HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - After dropping two-out-of three doubles matches, the Marshall University women's tennis team dominated its singles matches and rallied for a 6-1 victory over Eastern Michigan on Saturday afternoon at the Huntington Tennis Club.
"Eastern Michigan did a good job and was fired up in the doubles. We did a good job responding in the singles though. Hopefully we can learn from our slow start and use this as a lesson down the road."
In first doubles, the fourteenth-ranked team in the nation of Michaela Kissell and Dominika Zaprazna suffered their first loss of the season as they fell at the hands of EMU's Julia Breuss and Miriam Westerink, 8-4.
Deanna Bailey and Thaddea Lock handled Karina Ahuja and Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr as they cruised to an 8-2 victory in second doubles. However, EMU would take a 1-0 advantage into singles as Kara Kucin and Catherine Kellner fell in third doubles 8-5.
But singles action would prove to be all Marshall as five-of six Herd players won in straight sets en route to sweeping the Eagles 6-0 and improving to 4-0 on the young season.
Kissell got a bit of redemption by topping Breuss in No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1, and Zaprazna used a tie-break victory in second singles to beat the Eagle's Miriam Westerink 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8).
Kellner blanked her opponent en route to a dominating 6-0, 6-0 win against Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr, while Isabell Raich and Bailey each cruised to 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-0 victories, respectively. Lock rounded out the day with a 6-2, 7-6 triumph.
Through four matches, MU has defeated its opponents by a combined score of 27-1.
Marshall is back in action this Friday night, Feb. 5, at the Huntington Tennis Club as the Herd hosts arch rival West Virginia. Doubles action will start the night off at 5 p.m.
