STARKVILLE, Miss. - The National Fastpitch Coaches Associated released the 2009-10 Division I All-Academic Teams and Scholar Athletes earlier this week, with the Marshall University softball team coming in at 39th.

As a team, the Thundering Herd finished last season with a 3.306 grade point average - while placing seven individuals on the Scholar Athlete list. Appearing for the first time were Morgan Cottrell, Jessica Ferrick and Ashley Gue. Making their second debut were Rebecca Gamby and Alysia Hively and for the third-consecutive year Jessica Hughes and Melanie Stoehr were named Scholar Athletes.

To qualify for as a NFCA Scholar Athlete, the student-athlete must have a 3.5 GPA or better for the academic year.

"We place a strong emphasis on academic excellence and are very proud of the seven student-athletes who have successfully balanced their studies with the demands of Division I athletics," said head coach Shonda Stanton. "We are pleased with our team's commitment in the classroom and our goal is to break back into the top 10 nationally for this upcoming year."

Under Stanton's 11-year reign, the Herd has had a team GPA above 3.0 every year. Last season, MU was edged in conference only by UTEP, who posted a 3.337 average.
