HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Tron Martinez plunged in for a 1-yard touchdown with 1:47 left in the fourth quarter, with what proved to be the game winner, as the Marshall University football team held on to defeat UTEP, 16-12, on Homecoming at Joan C. Edwards Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Martinez finished with a career-high 116 yards on 24 carries, and the touchdown, which marked the first of his career as Marshall propelled to 2-6 overall and 1-2 in Conference USA play.
The Martinez score was set up thanks to a personal foul penalty on the Miners. Thundering Herd kicker Tyler Warner split the uprights from 19 yards out and appeared to have tied the score, 12-12 with just under two minutes to play in the contest. On the field goal attempt, Warner was knocked over causing the penalty and setting up the game-winning rush on the next play.
Quarterback Brian Anderson finished 13-of-26 through the air for 138 yards and one touchdown as Marshall improved to 57-44-8 all-time in Homecoming games and has won 17 of the last 20. Aaron Dobson hauled in four catches for 60 yards and a score.
Following a Trevor Vittatoe 23-yard touchdown pass to Kris Adams with 5:25 remaining, a crucial play took place. Leading 12-7, UTEP opted to attempt a two-point conversion, but the play backfired immensely. Vittatoe's pass was intercepted by cornerback Donald Brown and was returned 100 yards for a two-point PAT return, cutting the deficit to one possession, 12-9.
UTEP (5-4, 2-4 C-USA) received 229 yards in the air from Vittatoe along with a pair of field goals from kicker Dakota Warrant to lead the offense.
Next on the schedule for Marshall is a trip to Birmingham, Ala., to play UAB on Sat., Nov. 6 at 4 p.m. EST. The game will air live on CSS.
