HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University women's tennis team improved upon its best start in school history as the Herd up-ended Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon at the Huntington Tennis Club, 5-2.
The Thundering Herd is now 8-0 and has defeated three nationally-ranked opponents in a row (Miami (OH), Kentucky, Virginia Tech).
The afternoon started with MU sweeping all three doubles matches and earning one point. The 14th nationally-ranked tandem of Michaela Kissell and Dominika Zaprazna gave the home crowd a show as they trailed 3-0 and 4-1, but roared back and reeled off seven straight games for an 8-4 victory over VT's Shannon Betts and Christin Newman.
Deanna Bailey and Kara Kucin bounced back from their first loss of the season and were victorious in second-doubles, 8-4, while Thaddea Lock and Isabell Raich completed the sweep with an 8-5 win on court three.
The Herd won four of the six singles matches, led by Kissell, Catherine Kellner and Deanna Bailey, who all remained undefeated on the season with wins today.
Kissell defeated Martha Blakely in first singles 7-5, 6-4, while Isabell Raich dropped the first set in second singles but rallied for an 0-6, 7-6, 6-2 victory. Kellner secured the MU victory in fourth singles with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 triumph and Bailey won in fifth singles 7-5, 6-2.
"Today was a great college tennis match," head coach John Mercer said. "There were a lot of points that could have gone either way. Virginia Tech is a bunch of great competitors."
"With our win at Kentucky," Mercer continued, "We know we are going to get every teams best shot so I am proud of how our girls responded. They played very well today."
Marshall is on the road for its next four matches, starting next weekend when MU travels to Happy Valley for a battle with Penn State on Saturday and No. 35 Boise State on Sunday.
