Men's Golf Completes First Round of USF Invitational

DADE CITY, Fla.- The Marshall men's golf team completed play on day one of the USF Invitational on Monday afternoon in Dade City, Fla. at the Lake Jovita Golf Club as Nathan Kerns (Fr., Ironton., Ohio, Ironton H.S.) led MU with an opening round score of 75.

Kerns fired a three-over-par round to tie for 61st place overall for the Thundering Herd.

Boston Miller (So., Charleston, W.Va., Capital H.S.) tied for 88th on day one with a five-over-par round of 77 and Carson Schambach (So., Glen Dale, W.Va., John Marshall H.S.) finished three strokes behind Miller placing 104th.

Aaron Boggs (RS-Fr., Madison, W.Va., Scott H.S.) and Bennett Boyer (So., Millersburg, Pa., Millersburg Area H.S.) rounded off the team with an 83 and 86, respectively.

Tee times during day one and day two of competition are separated into two waves. On day one wave one's tee began at 7:30 a.m., while wave two saw action at 11:15 a.m.

The 2009 tournament runner-up Florida Southern College, along with Middle Tennessee State and Campbell University took the early led as they each shot a 288 through one round. But it was University of North Florida that shined during wave two and finished day one in the lead with a 286 in the opening round.

Florida Southern College's Matt Stauch and University of North Florida's Sean Dale shot four-under par, 68, to finish atop the scoreboard after first round play. Last year, Stauch tied Santiago Rivas at nine-under par, 207, for the tournament victory.

The Herd will continue in the three-day tournament, with round two scheduled for Saturday morning. MU will tee off in the early wave, which begins at 7:30 a.m. The tournament concludes with the final round of play on Sunday morning.
