Herd Men's Golfers Staying Busy

The Marshall University men's golf team is staying busy during the Summer of 2010. A number of the Herd players have participated in such tournaments as the May 15-16 West Virginia Junior Match Play Championship, the June 21-24 West Virginia Amateur (played at the Greenbrier Resort), the July 7-8 West Virginia Junior Amateur, and the July 14-16 West Virginia Open (played at the Sleepy Hollow Golf Club).

Redshirt senior Christian Brand (Charleston, W.Va.) fired a two-over 282 to place third at the West Virginia Amateur. Brand finished four shots behind the eventual winner, Jonathan Bartlett. Two other MU players; juniors Bosten Miller (Charleston, W.Va.) and Carson Schambach (Glen Dale, W.Va.) finished in the top 10. Miller was sixth (286) while Schambach tied for 10th with Ryan Mason. Schambach led the tournament after round one. Schambach later tied for 30th at the West Virginia Open.

Aaron Boggs, a redshirt sophomore from Madison, W.Va., came in 29th at the West Virginia Open. Sophomore Nathan Kerns (Ironton, Ohio) tied for 20th at the July 12-16 Ohio Amateur (played at the Kirtland Country Club).

The 2010 Marshall freshman class has had an impressive Summer. Hurricane native Brian Anania won the WVGA Junior Match Play Championship. The defending WVGA Junior Amateur Champion, Anania placed third at the 2010 Junior Amateur Championship. Anania tied for 25th (with three other players) and was the low amateur at the West Virginia Open and tied for 31st at the West Virginia Amateur (with three other players).

Marshall Hone, who is a freshman from Wheeling, W.Va., was sixth at the West Virginia Junior Amateur and tied for 39th with three other golfers at the West Virginia Open.

Freshmen Aaron Barna (Hurricane, W.Va.), Josh Holmes (Huntington, W.Va.), Lance West (Huntington, W.Va.), and Samuel Booth (Hurricane, W.Va.) all tied for eighth at the West Virginia Junior Amateur. Booth finished 36th at the West Virginia Amateur.

Jeremy Rogers, a freshman from Buckhannon, W.Va. charted a 13th place showing at the West Virginia Junior Amateur as well as a tie for 22nd (with two others) at the West Virginia Amateur.
