HUNTINGTON, W.Va .- The Marshall University women's soccer team travels to Athens, Ohio to once again do battle with the Ohio University Bobcats on Wednesday at Chessa Field. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
The Thundering Herd is in the midst of a two game win streak after beating Radford, 1-0 and Appalachian State, 2-0 to earn first place in the Best Western Huntington Mall Invitational this past weekend. Erin Blakely (Westerville, Ohio), Casey Walsh (Chalfont, Pa.) and Erika Duncan (Easthaven, Scotland) each tallied their first goals of the season on the weekend.
Sarah Vinson (Amelia, Ohio), Freya Holdaway (Landrindod Wells, Wales) and Lindsey Kerns (Hurricane, W.Va.) each earned All-Tournament team honors, while Blakely was named the MVP of the Invitational and received Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week honors.
The Herd registered two shutouts over the weekend and allowed only nine shots in two matches. In the prior three contests MU had given up eight goals on forty-four shots.
"This weekend was a step in the right direction for our defensive play," head coach Kevin Long stated. "As we go through the next couple of weeks we are hoping that we can have that same type of performance as we take on a very good SEC team in Kentucky and a MAC team that is very competitive right now in Ohio University."
The Bobcats enter Wednesday's matchup having dropped two straight. Ohio was defeated by Bucknell 1-0 on Aug. 27th, followed by a 2-0 loss to #13 South Carolina on the 29th. Goalkeeper Mattie Liston registered nine saves in the losing effort to the Gamecocks.
Ohio looks to avenge last season's 1-0 loss to the Thundering Herd, its first loss ever to MU in nine tries. Duncan registered the only goal of the night in the 86th minute, putting the all-time series at 1-7-1.
"Conference or not, we are about to step in to the most heated game so far of our season," Long continued. "Ohio, a old MAC rival and a team that we've had very heated competition with, both in the spring and in the fall in the past couple of years. It will be our hardest test to date and it'll let us know where we stand."
