NORFOLK, Va.- The Thundering Herd women's tennis team concluded day two of the ITA Mid-Atlantic Regionals with a majority of the squad losing out on Saturday, but Dominika Zaprazna and Maria Voscekova are still very much alive and will continue play tomorrow.
Zaprazna opened up singles play with a hard-fought win over Temple's Yana Mavrina in 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 sets, setting herself up for a round of 32 showdown with UVA's Hana Tomlijanovic - the tournament's No. 3 seed - that will begin tomorrow at 9:00 a.m.
On another court, Voscekova defeated Julia Blakely of George Washington University in 6-2 sets, meaning she, too, will play at 9:00 a.m. in the round of 32 on Sunday. The sophomore will square-off against UVA's Emily Fraser, who is seeded No. 2 in the tournament.
While busy winning singles matches, the teammates were not opposed to also claiming a victory in the doubles tournament, as they teamed up to take down Howard's Morgan and Stokes 8-2. The No. 4 seeded pair will now play tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. against UVA's No. 14 seeded tandem of Peretz and O'Koniewski, whom the Marshall duo defeated 8-6 when they last met at the Wake Forest Invitational some twenty days ago.
For the rest of the Marshall ladies, it was a tough day, as Kristina Koprcina, Kara Kucin, Karli Timko, and Ellie Ball all fell in their respective singles and doubles matches. Timko and Ball came the closest to joining Zaprazna and Voscekova on the winners' side, but they were narrowly defeated 9-8 by Hamling and Krohn of George Washington University. Kucin - who was eliminated from singles play yesterday - and Koprcina also fell by the slimmest of margins, 9-7, as they nearly upset the tournament's No. 3 seeded doubles team of William and Mary's Belaya and Loomans.
"I thought overall we were a little inconsistent today," said Head Coach John Mercer, "but that is sometimes typical of a fall season. We still have a lot to work on, and we will address that next week, but for now we still have Maria and Dominika playing in their singles and doubles matches and we are hoping they do well."
