Athens, Ohio - Inspired by the MLB playoffs, Marshall softball continues to roll in the fall season by defeating the Ohio University Bobcats 2-1 and 9-5 in the Sunday afternoon doubleheader held at Ohio Softball Field.
Game one displayed a pitchers dual between both Marshall's Andi Williamson and Ohio's Lauren McClary. The Bobcats struck first in the third inning after driving in a runner from third on a sacrifice fly. Yet The Herd struck back in the sixth inning when Williamson tallied a walk, followed by Kaelynn Greene's double that drove in Williamson. Taylor Thompson then delivered a clutch one-out single that drove in the speedy Greene from second, which gave MU the 2-1 advantage.
Andi Williamson recorded eight strikeouts throughout the first seven-inning matchup, which included striking out the side in the second inning. Kristina Braxton and Samantha Spurlock led Marshall at the plate, each going two-for-three with two singles.
Both squads let the bats head up in game two, as each team put runs on the board in the first inning. Greene opened the game with a single, then advanced to second and scored easily from there after Rebecca Gamby drove in an RBI-double. Bri Anna Hope drove in Gamby later in the inning on a single, giving Marshall the 2-0 lead.
Ohio struck back with a vengeance tallying five runs in the first inning off of Marshall pitcher Jessica Ferrick. Marshall's defense settled down the rest of the game, however, not allowing a single run in the remaining six innings. The Herd wasn't done at the plate though, as MU tallied runs four innings in a row, starting in the third when Bri Anna Hope drove in two runs on a homerun.
The fourth inning welcomed three more runs for Marshall as Kaelynn Greene and Taylor Thompson each got on base, followed by a Rebecca Gamby single and an error by the Bobcat defense. Hope was then hit by a pitch and Taylor Winton hit a ground out RBI, which concluded the scoring attack for The Herd.
Taylor Thompson drove in Kristina Braxton in the fifth inning and Bri Anna Hope hit her second homerun of the game in the sixth inning to give Marshall the 9-5 win over Ohio U.
Marshall recorded 11 hits throughout game two, and was led by Hope with two homeruns and three runs-batted-in. Throughout the entire 14 innings played Marshall only tallied one error in the field.
