Marshall in Seventh After Day One of C-USA Championships

HOUSTON - The Marshall University women's track and field team sits in seventh place after the first day of the Conference USA Championship meet at Yoeman Field, hosted by the University of Houston.



The Thundering Herd had stellar performances from Elaine Derricott, Vanessa Jules and Molly Grove on day one. Derricott finished third overall in the pentathlon, earning the Herd six team points, Jules placed third in the high jump, also giving MU three points, while Grove finished sixth in the weight throw, contributing three points.



In the pentathlon competition, Derricott took first place in the shot put with a toss of 11.54m, and placed second in the long jump with a distance of 5.54m. She finished behind Brianna Steel of Tulsa and Lisa Egarter of SMU.



Jules cleared 1.72m (5-07.75 feet) in the high jump, claiming third place in the event. Grove finished second in her preliminary heat of the weight throw, then threw for a distance of 17.03m in the finals. Terran Alexander of UTEP won the event with a distance of 18.85m.



Saturday's field events feature the women's shot put and triple jump, while the finals of many other track events begin at 3 p.m. UTEP leads all teams heading into the second day in Houston.
