Men's Golf Heads To Furman Intercollegiate This Weekend

Greenville, S.C. - The Furman men's golf team will host the 42nd Annual Furman Intercollegiate this weekend, March 18-20, at the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Club.

This year's 22-team field includes the defending Southern Conference champion Paladins, Charleston Southern, Chattanooga, defending Furman Intercollegiate champions Clemson, Davidson, East Carolina, Elon, Francis Marion, Gardner-Webb, Kennesaw State, Louisville, Marshall, Presbyterian, Purdue, Samford, Temple, Troy, UNC Wilmington, Virginia Tech, Western Carolina, Winthrop and Wofford.

Clemson claimed the 2010 Furman Intercollegiate title with an 865 (+1) while the Tigers' Ben Martin (-6) and Chattanooga's Steven Fox (-6) shared individual medalist honors. Five teams in this year's field enter this weekend ranked in the top 50 in Golfstat.com's latest head-to-head rankings, led by Purdue at No. 37.

The Furman University Golf Course was designed by Richard K. Webel of Long Island, N.Y., and Walter Cosby, superintendent of grounds and greens at the Greenbriar Hotel and Golf Resort.

Since the late 1970s, the course has been the site of two outstanding college tournaments, the Furman Intercollegiate and the Lady Paladin Invitational. In addition, the course hosts a number of local and state tournaments.

Through the years, a number of familiar names have played the course and participated in the Furman Intercollegiate. Past winners include Curtis Strange, Jay Haas, Mark Calcavecchia, Billy Andrade, Matt Kuchar and Furman's own Brad Faxon. LPGA stars Betsy King, Beth Daniel, Sherri Turner and Dottie Pepper all played their collegiate golf on the course as members of the Furman women's golf team.

Round one of the 54-hole tournament tees off on Friday morning at 8 a.m. with second round play slated for Saturday and final round action scheduled to begin on Sunday morning.
