Men's Golf Fares Well on Day One at Gleneagles

Marshall University's men's golf team is tied for seventh place after shooting a 295 Friday at the FAU Spring Break Classic that is being played at Gleneagles Country Club.

Ohio State enjoyed a great first round and posted a 10-under-par team score of 278 to distance itself from the rest of the pack. DePaul is second at 286 (-2) and is followed by Nebraska at 291 (+3), FAU and Minnesota at 292 (+4), Florida Gulf Coast at 293 (+5), and Marshall, Northwestern and Miami (Ohio) who are tied at 295 (+7).

Marshall senior Christian Brand navigated the 6,722-yard, par 72 course very well Friday and carded a three-under-par 69. The Charleston native is currently two strokes back of Ohio State's Dan Charen who leads the field after firing a 67 (-5).

Ohio State's Michael Cress and Florida Gulf Coast's Alex Medinis are currently tied for second at four-under, while Brand stands tied with Moritz Ackerhans of DePaul, Donald Constable of Minnesota and Chris Mory of Michigan State at three under.

The Thundering Herd's Brian Anania (Fr., Hurricane, W.Va.) shot a 74 Friday (tied for 36th), while Nathan Kerns (So., Ironton, Ohio) shot a 75. Marshall's Bosten Miller (Jr., Charleston, W.Va.) added a 77 and Carson Schambach (Jr., Glen Dale, W.Va.) an 81.

The second round of the 56-hole tournament is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Complete results, tee times and live scoring are available online at www.golfstat.com.
