PITTSBURGH, Penn. - The Marshall University Thundering Herd men's soccer team traveled north to Pittsburgh University on Friday night in preparation for a Saturday evening, preseason showdown with the host Panthers.
After falling 2-1 to VMI in an exhibition match earlier in the week, the Herd was looking to bounce back with a win over Pittsburgh, who it had never defeated in four previous attempts.
Herd forward Eddy Prugh got the team off to a great start when he headed home a Travis Brent free-kick just 17 minutes into the first half. Prugh would go on to lead all members of the Herd with six shots on the day.
Pittsburgh, however, responded with a goal from sophomore Nico Wrobel in the 33rd minute to level the score at 1-1. Then, with just 27 seconds remaining in the half, Panther's forward Ryan Myers put the ball beyond Marshall goalkeeper Daniel Withrow's reach to take a 2-1 lead.
From there, the Panthers continued to extend the lead, scoring three second half goals - two of which came against substitute goalkeeper Michael McCabe - to end the game with a 5-1 victory over Marshall. As it was against VMI, Marshall outshot its opposition, but once again had trouble putting the ball in the back of the net. The Herd tallied 20 shots in comparison to the Panther's 15.
The Herd will now look to regroup as its regular season opener is just five days away at Wright State. The game is scheduled to be played at 7:00 P.M. EST.
