Richmond, Ky. - The Marshall women's golf team broke open the 2011 season Sunday as they competed against Eastern Kentucky University and Morehead State University in a three team tri match. The Herd tallied a 317, just seven shots behind Eastern Kentucky (310) and 12 shots behind Morehead State (305) at Arlington Golf Club.
Korakot Simsiriwong (Thailand/Starkville Academy MS) led Marshall on the day with a score of 75 (38-37), placing second among 20 competitors. Allison Harper (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington HS) contributed to the Herd's total as well firing a 77 (40-37), which placed her fifth.
Coach Meredith Knight Rowsey was pleased with the lessons her team could take away and is eager to see the team compete again. Coach Meredith noted, "Our players each pinpointed accurate areas that need improvement for us to be successful throughout the season. We have much to build on going forward and with our talent the only place to go from here is up."
Medalist honors fell to the hands of Morehead State's Marisa Kamelgarn due to her even-par round of 72 (36-36). Eastern Kentucky was led by Linda Hogberg who tied Simsiriwong in second with 75 (37-38).
Recent West Virginia Amateur champion Samantha DiDomenico (Follansbee, W. Va./Brooke HS) posted an 81 (41-40) for the Herd. The fourth and fifth scores for Marshall were Rachel Thompson (Mansfield, Ohio/Ashland HS) 84 (40-44) and Kristyn Morrone (Pinehurst, N.C./Texarkana JC) 87 (45-42).
Marshall looks ahead to their Lady Bison Fall Classic at Bucknell Golf Course in Lewisburg, Pa. on September 10.
