RICHMOND, Ky.- The Marshall Thundering Herd cross country teams travelled to Richmond, Kentucky, on Friday afternoon for the season opening race at Eastern Kentucky University. This year's meet marked the sixth consecutive year in which the Herd and the Colonels have met for the duel, which dates back to 2006.

And much like last year's race - which saw the Colonels win both the women's and men's events - EKU stormed out to early leads in both meets and never took the foot off the gas.

Eight of the top ten finishers in the men's 5k were Colonel runners, while a similar eight runners in the top ten of the 3200 meter women's race were also from EKU. Marshall was led in the men's category by Matt Schiffbauer, who finished 4th overall with a time of 14:53. The next closest member for the Herd was David Caldwell, who finished 12th at 15:27.

On the women's side of things, Leslie Thomas paced the group with a 7th place time of 12:21, while Kelley Mortakis was 9th with a 12:36 finish time.

The Herd will now look to use the next two weeks to recover and improve for its next meet, which is scheduled to take place on September 17, at the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, Tenn.
