HUNTINGTON, W.VA. - The Marshall Volleyball program will be on the road again to compete in the IUPUI Volleyball Tournament. The tournament consists of competition from Eastern Michigan, IUPUI and Stetson.
The Herd will be playing Eastern Michigan and IUPUI on Saturday, September 3. The Eastern Michigan match starts at 10:00 a.m. ET and the IUPUI match is set for 7:00 p.m. ET. Marshall will play Stetson on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. ET.
Tournament hosts, IUPUI, will enter the tournament after starting the season with a 0-5 record. Their most recent loss was a 3-0 loss to Ball State. The Jaguars also took loses to nationally ranked opponents, No. 18 Iowa State and No. 14 Northern Iowa. IUPUI is led by Moriah Fair, who has already recorded 60 kills on the season.
Eastern Michigan will go into the tournament with a 3-1 record. Their only loss is 3-1 loss to Notre Dame. The Eagles are led by Rachel Iaquaniello, who has finished the first four matches with 67 kills.
"Eastern Michigan is always a good program," noted Coach Jacobs about the Eagles. "Kim (Berrington) is one heck of a coach. We played each other in the MAC quite a bit and her forte is being a floor defensive team. So you know that is what you are going to face."
"They have some really good athletes," Coach Jacobs continued. "They have a big time outside hitter and it looks like they block well. I know a couple of their kids on their team from recruiting and they are going to be tough blockers and a tough defense as a whole. We're going to have to pass the ball for us to be able to compete with them."
The final program rounding up tournament competition is Stetson. Stetson has not played in a match yet due to the William & Mary Invitational being cancelled because of Hurricane Irene.
"We're looking forward to playing some people we haven't played, said Coach Jacobs. "We haven't played IUPUI ever or Stetson ever and we haven't played Eastern Michigan since being in the MAC."
Marshall goes into the tournament 0-2 after losing to No. 24 Michigan and Morehead State in the Morehead State Tournament this past weekend. The Herd are led by outside hitter Laura Der, who posted 18 kills on the weekend and freshman setter, Sammie Bane, who scored a double-double in her first career match against Michigan.
