HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall had four players score in double figures and used a stingy defense in its 63-44 win over Tulane Wednesday at the Cam Henderson Center.
The Thundering Herd (14-8, 5-3 C-USA) broke a four-game losing streak by getting back to its roots, defend and rebound.
Marshall's 44 points allowed tied a season low and was the fewest by the Herd in a conference game since 1950. The Herd doubled the Green Wave's rebounding total 45-22 and recorded more boards than Tulane scored points.
"I'm really happy for my kids," said Marshall head coach Tom Herrion. "Their attitude has been phenomenal in this stretch. Our practices the last two days and our shoot-around today were outstanding. I think it's reflective of the attitude of our kids, leadership of the older guys and that's what I'm really proud of now."
Sophomore guard DeAndre Kane led a balanced scoring attack with 13 points to go with six rebounds and two assists.
Senior guard Shaquille Johnson was 3-for-3 from three-point range and finished with 12 points in just 19 minutes.
Robert Goff and Damier Pitts each scored 10 points. Goff was 5-for-9 from the field and had six rebounds. Pitts recorded a game-high eight assists and also had two steals.
Tulane led for the almost the first nine minutes of the game. With Marshall leading 14-12, the Herd went on a 19-2 run to take a 33-14 lead with 2:34 remaining in the half. Marshall led 35-22 at the half improving its record to 13-1 when taking a halftime lead.
The Herd lead never dipped below double-digits in the second half. Its largest lead of the game, 63-41, came after two free throws by Dennis Tinnon with 2:33 remaining in the contest.
Tinnon finished with a game-high 12 rebounds and scored six points.
"We finally got some easy baskets in transition because we rebounded the ball and obviously got easy baskets on stick-backs," said Herrion, whose team had 20 offensive boards. "We got to the foul line in the first half. Our defense and our rebounding carried us."
Marshall shot 40.4 percent from the field and of its 23 field goals made, 17 were assisted. The Herd was 7-for-17 (41.2 percent) from three-point range.
Tulane shot 40 percent from the field and was 5-for-17 from three-point range. The Green Wave was led by Jordan Callahan and Ricky Tarrant who each scored 11 points.
Marshall will next be in action at Tulsa on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET.
