Women's Golf Swings into Spring Season

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall women's golf returns to the fairways after a three month break following the fall season and opens the spring season with the 2012 Edwin Watts / Kiawah Island Classic.
The tournament will be played throughout a three-day period, starting on Sunday at 9:30 and extending to next Tuesday. The classic is being hosted by College of Charleston and will feature two golf courses including Oak Point and Cougar Point. Oak Point is a 5,902 yard par-72 setup, while Cougar Point is a 6,001 yard par-72 course.
The tournament includes competition from 33 teams including Akron, Arkansas State, Augusta State, UALR, Bucknell, Campbell, Charleston Southern, Chattanooga, The Citadel, College of Charleston, Daytona State, Elon, Georgetown, High Point, Illinois State, IUPUI, Jacksonville State, Longwood, Marshall, Mercer, Middle Tennessee State, Morehead State, Newberry, UNCG, Old Dominion, Oral Roberts, Presbyterian, Radford, Richmond, St. Johns, Western Carolina, William & Mary, Winthrop.
Traveling for the Herd will be senior Maria Battaglia (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands High School), junior Caitlyn Morrone (Pinehurst, N.C./Texarkana JC), sophomore Rachel Thompson (Mansfield, Ohio/Ashland High School), sophomore Allison Harper (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington High School), and freshman Korakot Simsiriwong (Thailand/Starkville Academy).
"We are excited to get back into competition," said head coach Meredith Knight Rowsey. "It's always tough to get started this early but this has been such a mild winter and I'm anxious to see how we will perform. I've seen some great things in practice thus far. I'm expecting us to be competing on Cougar Point the final day."
