Women's Golf Closes Out Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic

CHARLESTON, S.C. - After three days playing in the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic, Marshall women's golf finished 30th with a three-round score of 961.
In the final day of play, the Herd slipped eight spots after starting the third round at the No. 22 spot. Each of Marshall's five golfers struggled in the final round, posting the highest scores of the tournament on the last day.
Rachel Thompson led the Herd with a score of 233 (+17) after shooting the best score for Marshall on day three with a 78 (+6).
Marshall's leader in the first two days, Allison Harper, dropped off in the final day shooting an 85 (+13) to wrap with a final score of 236 (+20).
"Round one was shaky, but I was extremely pleased with round two," said head coach Meredith Knight Rowsey. "I'm not really sure what happened today. We certainly have a lot of work to do but at least we know that we have the ability."
Caitlyn Morrone, Korakot Simsiriwong and Maria Battaglia each shot over 83 for the last round. Morrone finished the tournament with a 246 (+30), while Simsiriwong ended the three rounds with a 247 (+31). Battaglia rounded up the Herd effort with a 261 (+45).
Peach Belt Conference members, Augusta State, was crowned the winners of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic after combining for a 877 (+13).
Fanny Cnops was the individual winner of the tournament, posting a 214 (-2) for the tournament. She is a member of the UNC-Greensboro golf squad.
Marshall women's golf will return to action for a two-day tournament in Murray, Ky. The Murray State New Wave Racer Classic will start on March 4 and conclude on March 5.
