HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- The Marshall University women's tennis team defeated the West Virginia University Mountaineers with a 6-1 victory on Sunday afternoon to extend its current winning streak to four matches. The win moves Marshall above .500 for the first time this spring since the season opening victory over Eastern Michigan, and means the Herd is now a perfect 5-0 at home in 2012.

Marshall has not lost to WVU since 1998, and on a temperate Sunday at the Brian David Fox Tennis Center the Herd would once again prove its dominance in the series with a convincing win over its ITA Mid-Atlantic Region opposition. Moving to 13-3 all-time against the Mountaineers, Marshall relied on stellar play from all six of its players to down a depleted WVU side in six of the seven matches.

The Herd entered the match already holding a 1-0 advantage after WVU defaulted the number six singles and number three doubles matches. Marshall then made quick work of the Mountaineers in the doubles contest by winning both matches for an early 2-0 lead. The number one tandem of Dominika Zaprazna and Maria Voscekova rallied to an 8-6 win over the Mountaineers' Mary Chupa and Ikttesh Chahal, while Karli Timko and Kai Broomfield won their second doubles match in three days with an 8-1 drubbing of Emily Mathis and Veronica Cardenas.

Kai Broomfield and Kara Kucin then kept the Herd's momentum rolling in singles play with convincing straight-set wins over WVU's Cardenas and Wickline, respectively. Maria Vosckekova - playing in the number one slot with Zaprazna taking a rest during the singles matches - also won her match, scraping out victory with a third-set, ten-point tiebreaker win against Chupa. Freshman Ellie Ball rounded out the Marshall wins with a hard-fought victory in a second-set tiebreaker.

"We needed to do what we did today," said Marshall head coach John Mercer. "We came out and played well enough to get them down early and clinch the match. Obviously WVU is struggling a little bit at the moment, but I think they'll continue to improve and it was a good win for us. That's four in a row for us and hopefully we'll get on a roll and keep building confidence heading into the spring break week."

The Herd will now take to the road for matches against Winthrop on March 19 and East Carolina on March 21, before returning home to face Eastern Kentucky on the 25th.
