HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - After taking the first two sets, Marshall volleyball allowed Morehead State to creep back into the match and take the game to five sets, but the Herd held strong and came out victorious, 3-2 (25-20, 25-23, 17-25, 12-25, 15-12).
The Herd played in front of 2,073 fans, marking the largest home crowd since playing in front of 2,737 against UAB on Oct. 12, 2007. The stands were filled with local elementary school children, as the Marshall marketing department held "Field Trip Day" for the event.
Marshall is now .500 on the season, improving to 4-4. Morehead State dropped to 2-6 with the loss. The Herd is still undefeated at home, keeping a 4-0 record in the Cam Henderson Center.
"It's great that we are 4-0 right now at home," said head coach Mitch Jacobs. "But without Dorothy Rahal, we wouldn't have even come close. Dorothy tonight was unbelievable - 23 digs and she passed absolute nails today - she is the main thing that held us together."
Rahal leads the team in digs for the season after her 23 dig performance with 103.
Sophomore Katie Potts contributed a season-high eight digs and led the team in hitting percentage with .286. She also tallied a career-high four service aces in the match.
Junior outside hitter Laura Der led the team in kills with 12 and recorded her fourth double-double after combining for 10 digs.
Service errors plagued both teams throughout the match. Marshall ended the game with 15 errors from behind the service line, while Morehead State recorded 16.
The Eagles ended the match with more kills, assists, digs, and blocks, but the final set was tipped in Marshall's favor after the Herd knocked down eight kills.
"The match was a struggle," said Jacobs. "We came out and won the first two sets, but weren't clicking offensively. You would think this was the opening match of the year, but we got the "W".
The Herd will travel to Kent, Ohio for its next three matches. Marshall will participate in the Kent State Tournament from September 7-8. The tournament will include competition from St. Francis (PA), Liberty, and Kent State.
