INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Marshall University Volleyball Team (5-1) battled to a five-set, 3-2 (25-22, 20-25, 25-27, 15-13), win over the Youngstown State Penguins to finish the Hampton Inn Invitational with a perfect 3-0 record.

"Great weekend for us. Proud of this group and their will to fight," Herd Volleyball Head Coach Heather Stout said. "Our middles are impacting the game so well on both sides of the ball, and their presence continues to open things up for Maddie. We're getting to see more and more of her depth and the different ways she can impact the game — taking on more responsibility and handling it seamlessly."
Beatrice Ciccarelli, an all-tournament team honoree for the second-straight weekend, finished with a team-high 20 points on 17 kills and four blocks. Maddie Smith led the team with 18 kills as Marae Reilly finished 14 attacks with a .462 hitting percentage. Emma Barnett concluded a quartet in double-figure kills with 11.

Emma Sayre registered a team-high 18 digs as Kehea Carvalho dished out 40 assists in the victory.

The first set saw the two sides split the first 32 points, sitting at a 16-16 standstill. However, a Reilly kill put the Herd up for the rest of the set. MU captured nine of the final 15 points to seal the opening set 25-22.

The Penguins answered with a 25-20 triumph and captured the third 27-25 in a see-saw affair that saw five lead changes and the scoreboard tied 17 times as Marshall trailed 2-1 in the match.

The Herd came out in the fourth and showed resiliency. MU's lone deficit in the frame was at 1-0. YSU put pressure on Marshall late tying the fourth 23-23, but kills by Reilly and Logan Henderson sealed it 25-23 and forced a winner-take-all fifth set.

"We also got to experiment with some different offensive systems, keeping Kahea in and utilizing Kylie defensively," Stout said. "That flexibility helped us down the stretch as we were able to fluctuate back into our 6-2 and get Carys going. Carys came in and made a big impact offensively, giving us another spark when we needed it.That's what makes this group so special. Their will to win, their willingness to find a way, and most importantly, they do it together. No matter the situation, we have faith that someone is going to step up and make it happen.

The fifth played out much like the fourth. MU trailed just once at 1-0 and the Penguins tied it late at 13-13 in the set to 15. However, the Herd proved tough again with a kill from Carys Kerr and a match-sealing block assist from Ciccarelli and Barnett to win the final set 15-13.

"A lot to be proud of this weekend. A lot more to build on next week as we head to Duke," Stout said.
