Marshall Splits Day 1 in Tri-Meet

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall's junior swimmer Kacey Preun (St. Andrews, Manitoba, Canada) clocked a team-season best in the 200 freestyle (1:56.22), Friday. The Thundering Herd's swimming and diving team is split after Day 1 in its first tri-meet of the season, trailing Old Dominion (131-54) and holding an edge over Radford (113-68) in the Dedmon Center Natatorium in Radford, Va.
"We were a little slow out of the gate in many of our races tonight," coach Bill Tramel said. "We had some bright spots. Certainly Kacey Preun's return, regardless of how she swam, which was great. "
Of the ten events on the day, Marshall took second in four events and posted a sole victory, as well.
With a time of 2:06.38, senior Sarah Kay (Cape Town, South Africa) triumphed in the 200 butterfly for the lone win of the day. Kaley Gregory (Hurricane, W.Va.) swam a season-best in the 1,650 freestyle, beating her previous 17:42.06 with a time of 17.33.35 to reel in second place.
On the diving end of the pool, freshman Megan Wolons (Williamsburg, Va.) placed third in the one-meter diving.
"We have an opportunity to improve on our performances tomorrow that is the beauty of a two-day meet," Tramel added. "We have an immediate opportunity to make corrections. We will learn a lot about our team tomorrow."
Marshall is hoping to stretch its winning record against Radford and win its first-ever meeting against Old Dominion.
The Herd will swim at 12 p.m., Saturday for Day 2 and the completion of the tri-meet between Marshall, Old-Dominion and Radford.
