- Marshall game captains: center Chris Jasperse, wide receiver Tommy Shuler, defensive tackle James Rouse and nickel Corey Tindal.

Wide receiver Demetrius Evans made his first start of the season (sixth career start).

With senior Brandon Sparrow sidelined (ankle), redshirt sophomore defensive tackle Jarquez Samuel made his first Marshall career start.

Marshall's fumbles on the first two possessions were its first of the season.

Sophomore running back Kevin Grooms' 1-yd touchdown rush was his first score of the season and ninth touchdown of his Herd career.

True freshman offensive lineman Michael Selby played the third Herd series, making his first appearance of his career at (left) guard. He was a backup center in the first two games.

Travis Carrie's 48-yard punt return is longest vs. the Herd this season. Its previous long had been 14 yards, and only three punts had been returned for total of 21 yards until then.

Tommy Shuler's first reception in the second half was his fifth of the game and 143rd of his career, tying him for No. 13 in Herd career history with Denero Marriott

Essray Taliaferro's third-quarter rushing touchdown was his second this season and the fifth of his career.

Rakeem Cato's touchdown pass to Gator Hoskins with 10:24 left in the game marks the 21st straight game that Cato has thrown a touchdown pass, a mark that is No. 2 among active FBS players in the nation. Derek Carr of Fresno State has 22 games (didn't play today). Marcus Mariota of Oregon is third with 16 games (including win today over Tennessee).

Cato's 367 passing yards gave him 7,109 for his career, moving past John Gregory (7,020) and Todd Donnan (7,050) to No. 3 all-time. Cato also moved past Dannan (7,057) to No. 4 in total offense with 7,267.

Gator Hoskins' touchdown catch in fourth quarter is the 16th of his career, tying him with tight end Sean Doctor (1987-88) at No. 13 all-time at Marshall. The tight end touchdown receptions record is 23 by Cody Slate (2006-09).
