PHILADELPHIA - An early goal by junior forward Myka DeMarco (Dallas) would not prove to be enough as the Thundering Herd fell to the La Salle Explorers, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.
Marshall drops to 3-2-1 on the season, splitting the weekend in Philadelphia, while La Salle improves to 4-1-0.
Three minutes into the match, DeMarco netted her second goal of the year on a long shot from the wing that sailed into the far upper corner. She has scored in back-to-back matches, making the gamewinner in a 1-0 victory Friday over previously unbeaten Temple.
La Salle evened things up in the 54th minute with a goal by Renee Washington, assisted by Maryam Huseini. She took a cross shot from the wing and finished from six yards away.
The go-ahead goal by La Salle's Kelsey Haycook sealed the score at 2-1 in the 76th minute. Dominique Ponente sent the ball in and Keri Aiken headed the ball to Haycook, who clinched it with a header to score.
Although the Herd defense didn't allow a shot until the 30th minute of play, the Explorers led the shot chart, 13-7, with nine shots on goal. Four of Marshall's seven shots were on target. La Salle held the advantage in corner kicks, 4-2.
Junior goalkeeper Lizzie Kish made seven saves for the Herd, a career best, and took two goals against. La Salle's Katie Getzinger made three saves and took one goal against.
The Herd will stay on the road for a match against the Liberty Flames Sunday, Sept. 15 at 2 p.m. in Lynchburg, Va.
