HATTIESBURG, Miss. -
Marshall volleyball slipped to 9-12, and 3-3 in conference play, after a 3-1 match loss to Southern Miss Sunday afternoon. The Herd fell in the first set 25-18, took game 2 by a score of 25-17, and then lost 25-17, 26-24.

Sophomore Cassie Weaver (Huntington) led the squad, posting 13 kills. Fellow second-year Ally Kiekover (Grand Rapids, Mich.) followed with 12.

Senior Sammie Bane (Brownstown, Ind.) picked up 40 assists, bringing her season tally to 655. The setter posted a match-best .667 hitting efficiency with four kills.

"Right now, I'm just doing a very poor job with this team," head coach Mitch Jacobs began. "I'm not sure where I lost them, but two weeks ago we were just becoming the team I thought we could be. This weekend, we were bad offensively. We were bad defensively."

"Our serve and pass game," Jacobs continued, "Has been excellent and that usually translates into a different outcome for us, but lately, once the ball is put into play, we look like we don't have any idea what we should be doing, and that is solely on me. I have to do a better job getting us to have an identity we can count on. Right now, we don't know who we are. And, the blame can only be on one person and that's myself."

In the opening frame, the Herd trailed by as many as nine points, falling 25-18. Marshall rebounded in set two, breaking away at the eight point mark and winning three straight points. The Herd continued to add insurance, increasing its lead by five points before taking the game 25-17.

Marshall couldn't maintain momentum, coming up short in the third game 25-17.

In the fourth set, the Herd battled, as the game saw nine ties. Southern Miss used a series of three-point sequences to build an advantage. Marshall worked its way back, using its own three point rally to tie the match at 24 all, before succumbing to the Golden Eagles' at 26-24.

"This week of practice will be very important for us," Jacobs finished, "As we begin our longest home stand of the year."

The Herd will welcome UAB and Charlotte to Huntington to begin the home stand. Marshall will face the Blazers on Friday, Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. and concludes the weekend with the 49ers on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 1 p.m.
