Herd Softball Cruises to Victory

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- The Marshall softball team earned two big wins in its first two home games of the fall season, with a 4-0 win over University of Charleston and a 19-4 win over Shawnee State at Dot Hicks Field. The Herd combined for 31 hits in its two games, with 10 in the first and 21 in the second.
AGAINST THE GOLDEN EAGLES
The Herd would get things started through Morgan Zerkle, who would single on a bunt, steal second, advance to third and score on a Shaelynn Braxton (1-3, 1 RBI) single. Zerkle would finish the game 3-3 with two runs. In the fifth inning, Elicia D'Orazio (1-3, 1 RBI) would drive Zerkle home as well. Alyssa Woodrum and Kylie Howard would also score runs for Marshall.
In the circle, Jordan Dixon showed a commanding presence for The Herd, with only two hits in seven innings pitched. Dixon also threw 10 strikeouts.
AGAINST THE BEARS
In game two, Shawnee State would get out to a quick start first, scoring four runs in the first inning. Jordyn Pennington drove in two runs for the Bears in just one at bat. After the first half inning, the tide turned towards the Thundering Herd. After Elicia D'Orazio would score from an error, Zerkle would score from an error as well. Katalin Lucas would then belt a home run off the left field foul pole. Shaelynn Braxton and Kyle Howard would later hit home runs as well. From a 10 run second inning, the Herd would cruise to a 19-4 win that ended after five innings.
Braxton finished the game 4-4 with 4 RBI and 2 runs. Kylie Howard finished 3-4 with 3 RBI and 3 runs. D'Orazio again had a big game, hitting 4-4 with 4 runs.
Brittanie Fowler and Marissa Bethke combined in the circle for The Herd. Fowler pitched two full innings, allowing two earned runs. Bethke would allow only one hit and pitched two strikeouts as well.
