9/29/2014 12:00:00 AM | Men's Golf
LORTON, Va. - Sophomore Clark Robinson (South Windsor, Conn.) placed second while leading Marshall men's golf to a runner-up team finish at George Mason's Patriot Intercollegiate at Laurel Hill Golf Club on Monday.
Robinson's three-round total of 3-under-par 210 tied Christopher Crawford of Drexel at runner-up. For the second consecutive year at the event, Robinson shot a career-low round of 66 during the final 18 holes. He is the eighth player in Herd history to shoot a 66, and is the only Marshall player to do it twice. Sixty-six is the second-lowest round in the Herd record book behind Linden Meade's 63 at the 1958 Mid-American Conference Championship.
Freshman Alex Weiss (Pickerington, Ohio) also reached a career-low of 70 on the final day, tying for fifth in the individual field with three other players.
ON THE LEADERBOARD
Missouri took the team victory out of 17 teams at 1-under 851, three strokes ahead of the Herd (2-over 854). The Tigers' Ryan Zech earned individual honors at 4-under 209.
GABBING WITH GROBE
Quotes by Coach Matt Grobe:
On Marshall's runner-up finish:
"I'm happy with how the team fought today. Missouri is a very good, well-coached golf team. It was an exciting day of golf. Although we're a little disappointed with not getting the win, it was a great tournament and one for us to build on. We have a really short turnaround as we leave on Saturday for the Bearcat Invitational."
On Clark Robinson's runner-up finish:
"Clark played a great final round and almost won the championship. It was the second year he closed with a 66, which is impressive. I'm proud of the way he played at this event."
