Herd to Start Season in Akron, Ohio

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - For the second straight year, the Marshall men's and women's cross country programs will begin the fall season at the Tommy Evans Invitational with this year's event getting underway Thursday evening in Akron, Ohio.

HAVE YOU HERD?
The 2014 Thundering Herd boasts a new look with a total of 17 newcomers, as 14 of those will run for the women's program. Coach Jeff Small enters his 17th season at the reigns of the cross country programs at Marshall.
SCOUTING THE MEET
Hosted by Mid-American Conference member Akron, the women's 5k will begin at 5:30 p.m., and will be followed by the men's four-mile race at 6:16 p.m.
In the 2013 meet, the Marshall men and women each finished in fifth place overall, while now-senior Jack Whitney (Ripley, Ohio) was the highest finisher for the Herd. Whitney clocked a time of 20:48 in the 6400-meter event, which was good enough for 12th place in the event.
SMALL TALK
"We are looking forward to starting this season," said coach Small. "Our pre-season training has gone well and it will be exciting to watch our freshmen debut in collegiate cross country."
THE FIELD
Marshall will take on host Akron along with Kent State, Malone and Youngstown State.
UP NEXT
The Herd will have over two weeks off before its next meet on Sept. 20 at the Asheville Cross Country Carnival in North Carolina.
