Marshall Cross Country Squads Take Fifth in Season Opener

AKRON, Ohio - For the second straight year, the Marshall men's and women's cross country programs opened its fall season at the Tommy Evans Invitational and just as in 2013, the Thundering Herd finished fifth in both the men's 6440 meter run and the women's 5k on Thursday night.

Senior Caleb Bowen (Hurricane, W.Va.) was the top finisher for the Marshall men, ranking 15th best in the men's 6400 meter, in a time of 21:12, while freshman Tori Dent (Scott Depot, W.Va.) finished first for the Herd women in a time of 20:13 for 18th overall in the 5k.

Host Akron finished second and third as a team in the men's and women's meets, respectively, while Malone took first in both the men's and women's events as a team.

On the meet as a whole
"The meet was a great way to start the season against some quality teams."

On the performance of the women's team
"I was really proud of how our girls competed, especially our freshmen Tori Dent, Madeline Armstrong and Barkley Castro who all finished top six for the team."

On the performance of the men's team
"Our top three men: Caleb Bowen, Jack Whitney and William Shaffer performed well, but the other guys have to step up their performances in the weeks to come."
