@Herd_Tennis Opens Spring Season Saturday

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.-Marshall tennis will open its 2015 season, playing host to College of Charleston, on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 11 a.m. at the Huntington Tennis Center in Barboursville, W.Va.



The Herd welcomes three new faces to its squad in freshmen Maddie Silver (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Cristina Kaiser (Philadelphia), and Marija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia).



Returning to the Herd are Conference USA second team members-- sophomore Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) and senior Kai Broomfield (Toronto). Joining the duo are C-USA third team recipients sophomores Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) and Rachael Morales (Reynoldsburg, Ohio), and fellow second-year Anne Gulsrud (Stavenger, Norway).

Marshall climbed as high as No. 62 during the 2014 spring season by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), the national rankings organization for collegiate tennis.



Turhan begins the year ranked No. 116 nationally in singles. The sophomore is the first Herd player to be ranked since 2011. Turhan also boasts a No. 10 singles ranking in the Atlantic Region.



Silver, who came to Marshall as the No. 49 national prospect, is also ranked regionally at No. 19.



SCOUTING THE COUGARS



College of Charleston finished last spring as runner-up of the Colonial Athletic Association, posting an 18-8, 4-2 record.



Senior Samantha Maddox returns after leading the Cougars with 18 wins last season. Maddox picked up 10 wins at fourth singles in 2014.



UP NEXT



Marshall will travel to the ITA/UTSA National Team Indoors in Los Angeles on Jan. 24-25. The Herd will face No. 1 UCLA and either No. 72 UC-Irvine or No. 64 Kansas State at the tournament.
